Dr. Morton was born Julia Frances McHugh on a farm in Middlebury, Vermont. Her work as a commercial artist in New York brought her in contact with Canadian botanist Kendal Morton. They married and founded the world-famed Morton Collectanea at the University of Miami.

Julia Morton continued disseminating well-researched lore on economic botany for more than thirty years after the passing of her husband.

Dr. Julia Morton was noted for exacting research, a generous civic spirit and a formidable personality -- as indicated by this quote:

"I don't want to suppose. I want to know"
